Ria Formosa Natural Park (half-day)
Faro is surrounded by the channels and marshes of the Ria Formosa, a protected system of tidal lagoons, which extends for about 60 kms along the coast. The natural park includes also adjacent areas of salt pans, salt marsh, farmland and Umbrella-Pine forest. The bird-life is very diverse and includes emblematic birds like Azur-winged Magpie, Hoopoe, Common Waxbill or European Bee- eater. Booted Eagle and Black-winged Kite overwinter with regularity. From the observatory at the lake at the Golf-resort of Quinta do Lago, we might be able to get good views of the Purple Swamphen, symbol of the natural park, as well as Little Bittern and the introduced resident Black- headed Weaver. In the Salt-pan areas its possible to spot many waders. Also the Slender-billed Gull, Auduinii’s Gull, Stone Curlew and the common Greater Flamingo.
